We’re Hiring: Junior Hydrogeologist at Aqua Earth

We’re Hiring: Junior Hydrogeologist – Aqua Earth (Johannesburg, Gauteng)

Aqua Earth is excited to announce an opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed Junior Hydrogeologist to join our growing team in Randburg. This role is ideal for early-career scientists who are passionate about groundwater, eager to gain extensive field experience, and ready to contribute to real-world environmental and water-resource challenges. If you are seeking a role that blends practical fieldwork with technical analysis and professional development, this position offers an outstanding platform to build your hydrogeological career.

About the Role

As a Junior Hydrogeologist at Aqua Earth, you will work closely with senior hydrogeologists, project managers, and field teams to support groundwater investigations across various regions. This is a field-oriented and technically engaging role, offering the opportunity to participate in on-site drilling, borehole development, aquifer testing, and environmental monitoring programs. You will be exposed to the full workflow of groundwater exploration and management—from initial site assessment to data interpretation and reporting.

This position requires a high level of curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the ability to adapt to diverse project environments. You will support projects related to groundwater supply, environmental assessments, regulatory compliance, and sustainable groundwater development. Through hands-on experience, you will develop a strong understanding of hydrogeological principles, drilling operations, aquifer characteristics, and groundwater quality assessment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Support Groundwater Investigations
Your role will involve assisting in hydrogeological site assessments, groundwater resource evaluations, and conceptual model development. This includes organizing field programs, reviewing available geological and hydrological data, and helping identify potential groundwater targets.

2. Borehole Siting and Drilling Supervision
You will participate in fieldwork that involves selecting appropriate drilling locations based on geological and geophysical inputs, assisting in supervising drilling activities, recording borehole lithology, and ensuring that drilling procedures follow project requirements.

3. Pump Testing and Aquifer Characterization
The role includes supporting step tests, constant-rate pump tests, and recovery tests to evaluate aquifer properties such as transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and storativity. You will help collect test data, maintain accurate logs, and prepare preliminary interpretations.

4. Water Quality Sampling and Environmental Monitoring
You will participate in water sampling campaigns to assess chemical, physical, and microbiological parameters. This includes ensuring proper sampling techniques, maintaining chain-of-custody documentation, and contributing to monitoring programs for compliance and impact assessment.

5. Technical Reporting and Documentation
You will assist in preparing technical reports, field records, monitoring summaries, and compliance documentation for regulatory submissions. Strong written communication skills will be essential, as you will contribute to the presentation of hydrogeological findings and project outcomes.

What We’re Looking For

  • BSc in Geology, Hydrogeology, or related field (Honours degree is advantageous and will be an asset).

  • A solid understanding of groundwater principles, drilling processes, and borehole development.

  • Familiarity with pump testing procedures and groundwater monitoring techniques (training will be provided).

  • A valid driver’s license, as field mobility is an important part of the role.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and readiness to engage with hands-on field activities.

Why Join Aqua Earth?

Joining our team means becoming part of a company that values innovation, professional growth, and responsible water resource management. You will have opportunities to learn from experienced hydrogeologists, gain exposure to diverse projects across the region, and develop practical skills that will shape your long-term professional path.

We foster a supportive environment that encourages learning, teamwork, and continuous technical development. Whether you are passionate about groundwater supply, environmental stewardship, or hydrological science, Aqua Earth provides the platform to turn scientific knowledge into meaningful, real-world applications.
